Life is not the reality as we know – we all carry a personal map of reality within ourselves. We start drawing this map from the day we were born. As we grow and gain experiences we often find that we lack many stable points through which we can measure our reality. Sometimes realities can become increasingly difficult to handle, especially with constant stress at work and home. People often struggle with loneliness, sorrow, tension, anxiety, and inner and outer conflicts. People find it difficult to cope with work pressure, getting along with colleagues, low self-confidence, social anxiety, anger, addiction, fears, and phobias. These as well as other such problems involving thoughts, behavior, and emotions are the focus of this therapy.

Marriages are made in heaven they say. However, heaven for each person is different and there begins the problem. Many marriages are troubled with conflict and become a source of pain instead of love and happiness. I work with couples through marriage counseling in individual and joint sessions to resolve relationship problems. Initial sessions of marriage counseling or couples counseling involve working with one partner at a time. After some headway has been made individually, joint sessions are encouraged.

Abuse is a misuse of power and is intended to harm or control another person. The maltreatment can be physical, verbal, or emotional. All types of abuse are capable of inflicting pain and psychological distress. Abuse can leave psychological wounds that are harder to heal than bodily injuries. Whether the abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, financial, or domestic, survivors suffer from its psychological implications for years. Anxiety, Anger, flashbacks, depression, dissociation, mood issues, and trust issues are common in people who have experienced abuse. Abuse can impact a person’s ability to form relationships and find happiness. Sometimes these abuses work at an unconscious level to sabotage your happiness and success in life. I can help abuse survivors address these symptoms and overcome challenges.

However, their emotional display, behavior, and reasoning are different from adults. A child’s brain starts mapping reality from the day they are born. Normalcy is perhaps one of the most hyped myths. There is no definition of normalcy. It consists of a group of personal reactions and situations that society finds desirable. However, all of us deviate from that standard in some or the other way. Seeking counseling simply means you are in a situation- external or internal- which has left you confused and disturbed and you simply need help and guidance to work with that situation.

The therapist has your concerns next to his heart. His objective is to help you achieve your goals. However, a good therapist will first let you identify your challenges and then guide you to make informed decisions on your own. Like any professional, therapists have their code of dos and don’ts. You pay the therapist for spending his time with you. Most of the time involved in therapy is focused on dealing with your emotional difficulties. However, if you wish to call him for a brief talk to discuss something, you may, but if the problem requires extended discussion, you would need to request for an appointment.

Any emotional problem or difficulty has its roots in our inner nature. Our feelings depend on how we think about ourselves, others, and our situations. Often we think in ways that are irrational or flawed. This is not because we are “foolish” or “wrong” in any way, but, because we have learned to perceive things in a certain way. Being professionally trained to be unbiased and objective, a therapist is capable of helping you point at the negative or irrational patterns of thinking. This provides you with some clarity and perspective to help you deal with the problem more effectively. In addition, the psychotherapist provides you with customized tools and techniques to work on those difficulties. Expecting a magical or quick-fix solution from counseling results in disillusionment. It is a slow process, where you first accept that some changes are required within you and then progress gradually at making those changes. Expecting the therapist to make your decisions or solve your problems will lead to disappointment. A therapist does not make decisions for you but guides you to make and trust your own decisions. It is a system to support, encourage, and guide you. In your most vulnerable moments, your therapist will stand by your side to inspire you and bring out the best version of you.

Entering the counseling process is like entering a new relationship. Who is to say how long that relationship should last? Since counseling is a means of exploring yourself and identifying your inner patterns, it might take a few months to learn and understand things. A therapist doesn’t set a deadline for counseling, it depends entirely upon how you feel and perceive the positive changes within yourself. That said, the duration differs for different individuals and problems. A few of my clients have been with me for years. They started with once a week session, but now we meet once in every 2-3 months just to recheck and discuss their rationality and approach. Also, some are just happy to know that I am around in case they need me, even though they are doing exceedingly well in their personal as well as professional lives.

I usually aim at an 8-week engagement to achieve the evaluated goals. However, if the client feels he needs to work more or if I feel that there are more areas to cover then I reassess the training requirements and schedule.

When you feel confident to decide for yourself and think that you seek your therapist less often, you are ready to discontinue. Abruptly putting a halt to the counseling is not encouraged; instead a gradual decrease in the frequency of the sessions is suggested. However, you can be honest with your therapist if you wish to discontinue your counseling. We would be happy to help you with the decision regarding what can be most beneficial for you.
